"Perspectives on Philanthropy: From the Local to the Global"
Guest Speaker: Julia Stasch, President, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation

Interest in philanthropy is on the rise, as individuals want to help make Chicago a better place for all to live and prosper, and global challenges demand large-scale investment in feasible solutions.

MacArthur Foundation president Julia Stasch will talk about trends in giving, and impact investing, highlighting opportunities for personal philanthropy here in Chicago and the types of proposals that are competing for $100 million through MacArthur’s 100&Change competition.

The MacArthur Foundation is one of the nation’s largest philanthropies with assets of more than $6.3 billion, and offices in Chicago, Mexico City, New Delhi, and Abuja, Nigeria. With a broad background of leadership in the business, governmental, and philanthropic sectors, Julia joined the Foundation in 2001 and became the president in 2014. Prior to joining the Foundation, she worked for the City of Chicago, first as Commissioner of the Department of Housing and as Chief of Staff to then Mayor Richard M. Daley. She was President and Chief Executive Officer of Shorebank Chicago Companies, including South Shore Bank, the nation's first community development bank. Joining Chicago-based real estate development firm Stein & Company in 1977, she left in 1996 as President and Chief Operating Officer to become part of the Clinton administration as Deputy Administrator of the General Services Administration, responsible for management of government-wide building construction, leasing, and management. Earlier, she was a Vista volunteer and a teacher in the Chicago public schools. Julia is on the steering committee for World Business Chicago’s Plan for Economic Growth and Jobs and is a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, the Economic Club, and The Chicago Network.
