    About The Conservation Center

The Conservation Center is the largest and most comprehensive private art conservation laboratory in the country. With 40 years of experience, The Center is a leader in the field of art preservation, evolving new treatments and methods to adapt to the rapidly changing art world. We have cared for fine art from some of the country’s most prestigious private collections, museums, galleries, insurance companies, and corporations. Our conservators are expertly trained in the treatment of paintings, works of art on paper, photographs, textiles, murals, antique and fine furniture, rare books, frames and gilding, objects, and sculpture.

Founded in 1983, The Center grew from a handful of painting conservators to 30 staff members with a wide range of specializations. In 2012, The Conservation Center moved from Chicago’s River North neighborhood to its new home in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor in West Town. With the help of Studio Gang Architects, we revitalized a late 19th-century warehouse, previously used to store gold, into a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory.

The Downtown Book Club will meet on Thursday, June 20, for dinner and a social discussion on the book The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The location will be announced soon.

    About the Book:

The winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as seven other awards, The Sympathizer is the breakthrough novel of the year. With the pace and suspense of a thriller and prose that has been compared to Graham Greene and Saul Bellow, The Sympathizer is a sweeping epic of love and betrayal. The narrator, a communist double agent, is a “man of two minds,” a half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon, and while building a new life with other Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles is secretly reporting back to his communist superiors in Vietnam.

The Sympathizer is a blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping espionage novel, and a powerful story of love and friendship.

Henrietta (Hetty) Green (1834-1916) was among the most successful investors in U.S. financial history, yet few people know her name. She navigated the volatile markets and fickle monetary currents of the Gilded Age, profiting during both the peaks and troughs while most of her male contemporaries amassed and subsequently lost their fortunes. Some called her the richest woman in America; others deemed her the Witch of Wall Street.

Join us for an intriguing conversation with the widely respected financial historian and author of Investing in U.S. Financial History - Understanding the Past to Forecast the Future, Mark Higgins, CFA, CFP, and SVP of Index Fund Advisors. Moderated by CFE member Kerry Jordan, Mark will introduce us to the extraordinary life of Hetty Green, looking back at what made her an astute investor, how she succeeded in a male-dominated era, her most important investing lessons, and how you can apply those lessons today.

    About Mark Higgins:

    Mark J. Higgins, CFA, CFP®

Mark is also the author of Investing in U.S. Financial History: Understanding the Past to Forecast the Future. The book recounts the financial history of the United States, beginning with the innovative financial programs of Alexander Hamilton in 1790 and ending with the Federal Reserve’s ongoing battle to contain inflation. In March 2024, Investing in U.S. Financial History was awarded a bronze medal in the prestigious 2024 Axiom Book Awards under the category of “Personal Finance/Retirement Planning/Investing.”
